Devotion

For every daughter whose destination arrived before her future.

Rocky winds flickered through the leaves

leaving warnings.

The father holds a tender little hand by his finger.

tears sprawl his dark face;

A face she's only seen smiling

but it is what the Gods say

it is what the people believe.

The sand pours across her face as her grip tightens

her tears with hurt; his tears with resistance.

How does one reason with beings who've barely inhaled?

the sand covers much of her now

"The next world shall be kinder to her," he believes.

He says it again, louder, even though his belief is enough for him.

She surrenders in a battle destined to be lost

but it must be for reason,

as the Gods shan't wrong us.

Her tender little hand slowly softens grip

the father wipes his tears with the same hand

he held hers with

he sees red on hands his companions see devotion,

perhaps his next daughter shall help him see the piety

running through his creases.
