Dear No One…

You're like the last copy

of a centuries-old thriller

I could never afford

Safely locked away

behind bulletproof glass,

close enough for my eyes to see,

but miles away from my reach.

Every night I contemplate

breaking in

and stealing you away.

In my dreams,

you lay against my chest

while I caress your cover.

My hungry eyes

beg my fingers

to riffle through your pages,

while my mind devours

every word written inside you.

You invite me in, again and again,

to feel the texture of your pages,

to trace every line,

as your intoxicating scent

lingers in my nose.

On some days,

you're a Billie Holiday record

forgotten in an attic,

buried beneath

piles of old, bug-infested things,

your beautiful music

waiting to be heard.

Darling,

I'm dying to pick you up,

blow the dust from your surface,

lower the needle,

and let my ears feast

on your mellifluous melodies.

Every part of me comes to life

at the thought that you would have me.

Dear No One,

I'd bruise my knees before Christ

if eternal life with you

were promised upon the cross.
