Cool Mom

I may not be the cool mom

that believes the "but I'm hungry for ice cream" argument

or lets them throw temper tantrums

in the supermarket for the latest car toy

I do not believe I ever will

let them wear mismatched clothes to school

where one sock is blue and the other purple

or draw Toy Story Characters on my expansive marble counter

I most certainly will not allow them

to own smart phones before a library card

or watch them play video games

instead of hopscotch and hide-and-go-seek

But I will be the mom that helps with English homework

and making papier mache for the school play

I trust to remember how

to name animals for the zoo trips

I will study YouTube the night before

so "Mommy, did you know?" never catches me off guard

I will teach them to say please and thank you

the importance of knowing how to say grace before eating

and that loving their bodies is non-negotiable

To memorise my phone numbers in case of emergency

I guarantee that there'll come a day

where I forget all my do’s and don'ts

giving in entirely to tiny humans

teaching me as much as I'll teach them.

One thing is for certain,

I'm ok with not being a cool mom

as long as I try to be a good one
