CARRY ME

Carry me, God; carry me

when my knees forget what my heart promised.

Carry me;

when the road becomes

larger than my courage.

Carry me;

when I have spent

everything I know

and tomorrow

still ask for more.

Do not carry

my becoming.

That part

I must walk.

Do not lift me

over every difficult place.

Some stones

were placed there

to teach my feet

where to land and stand firm.

Some mountains

are not punishment.

They are classrooms

without walls.

So carry me

when I am drowning.

But when the water lowers, put my feet back

on the ground.

Let me learn the weight of standing.

Let me discover what these legs can do

when nobody is holding them.

I do not want a life so protected

that I never meet my own strength.

I want the kind

of faith that says:

“I am afraid.

BUT I will still go.”

Carry me when I cannot.

Release me when I can.

And when I become strong enough

to carry somebody else,

Remind me that strength

was never meant to become a throne.

It was meant to become a bridge.
