Stanza 1:Past
He returned wounded
In battle be it life or war;
He returned scarred—
His countenance being
the count on the nonce
For the event.
Defaced with a void
Where eye need be—
A void filled with
Memories of the battle;
Travelled homewards
In hope to leave
This allegory of the past
To take refuge in the future.
Stanza 2: Present
Feeling easier
To carry the trunks
To his door
Carrying a heavy heart
That heaves
A sigh of relief
Upon the bark of a companion
Waiting a long time;
Prying open the door
Two souls in fur
Run out to kiss
Only on smell
All through the musty and dust
Of the battle,
Seizing only what made
Their tails wag.
Stanza 3: Future
They saw no wounds
Yet their care
Caressed the wounds
Be it the older one
That knew his face
Before he lost it,
Or the new one
Who now recognizes
Only his love and nothing else;
Both blind to the wounds
That had blinded him.
Such is their blind love
Helping him see forth
A bright life past
All the darkness of the past.
