Bittersweet Goodbyes

By Gianna Torres

As that dreadful moment approaches once again

It’s when I wish time could stop

We can laugh and talk for hours

A world without a watch

It’s as if time doesn’t exist

Minutes feel like milliseconds

Milliseconds freeze time

Nobody else exists

I float in a sea of blue

The same sea I once drowned in

But now I know how to swim

This moment can last forever

Then reality kicks in

As we bear our farewells, it’s as if my heart is being weighed down

Not by an anchor

By a painful frown

But not one worn on the outside

No, not with her

It’s deep within when I realize this can’t last forever

If it were my choice, it’d never end

But in this case, I can’t choose

Neither of us leaves

Neither of us makes a move

This can't last forever

Not now at least

That’s when I’m the one to break loose

Unspoken words nobody can find

If only I could read her mind

If only she can read mine

I don't want to assume because that assumption is way too bold

But I feel it

We feel it

Is it just me

Or is it us both

The look in her eyes

The smile on her face

The tone of her voice

That beautiful gaze

I want to scream the truth

My feelings need to break free

No, I can’t do that to her

I also can’t do that to me

Gazes become stares

Stares turn into words

Words turn into actions

Actions that reflect my feelings, not hers

But what if there was a possibility

Am I just losing my mind

I must be going crazy

These feelings are solely mine

A boat with no sail

A candle with no flame

A Cupid without its bow

A feeling with no name

A tiger being tamed

Wanting to be freed

If only she felt the same
