Because we chose
to collide like stars,
not dandelions,
we got a galaxy, not a garden;
we are thus blinking stardust
too near, too far
in our own aftermath.
Because we chose silence in our tongue
so many times,
we made a statue, not a gramophone;
we are thus stillness, not songs.
Because we chose to cry
at the feet of time,
we made an ocean, not a shrine;
we are thus waves, not amulets.
Because we chose to stay
and not chase the wind,
we grew roots, not wings;
we are thus an Oak, not sparrows.
Because we chose to plunge
into the bottom of the inkwell,
we got stabbed by the pen;
we are thus poems, not portraits.
Because we chose
to hide our eyes
in the shadow of clouds
under the cotton quilt of a dream,
we got the night, not day;
we are thus the full-moon
in our sleepy sky.
