Aspirations

Winter’s first bite,

and the novel sight of our breath

escaping us in plumes.

Before the cold sinks it’s teeth

and we can only bow our heads,

plough on through;

I am reminded of my childhood self.

Bundled up and beaming up at my big sister,

as she pinched an imaginary cigarette,

puffed pearly clouds of vapour.

The child who joined in with delight.

Now I am a parent. Winter nips again

and nostalgia yearns to teach this

to my children.

But we blow smoke from fiery bellies

and spread our fearsome wings.

Why dream of being smokers,

when we can

dream of being

dragons?
