As beautiful as it gets
By Meghna Pranesh Badami
Is it worth being nonchalant,
If it stings from the inside?
Like a million polished sharpened swords,
Twisting your intestines.
Is it worth the fleeting joy,
If we leave all this mess behind?
Expecting each other to scrub it clean,
Till one day we're too exhausted to be bothered by the heaps.
Will it ever be worth it?
The sudden change in equations like the flick of a switch.
The million new burdens, rules and expectations.
The pangs in your heavy heart you're forbidden to express.
Till you hold back golden tears,
Pretend they never meant a thing.
Pretend you're strong and un-inflicted
By petty human feelings.
But when it hits:
It wounds to incapacitate.
Because you always believed you were
Stronger than that.
Better than that.
You weren't like the commons who towed out every miniscule little mistake.
Maybe love and joy and excitement.
Will always drag along
Lust, jealousy, drama.
Like fraternal twins,
So far apart in character
But can't do without one another.
Thus arises the ugly question:
Do we explore the beautiful only to find more poison?
Or do we
Take a step back,
Till the gore is out of sight,
And pretend the scene at the horizon
Is only as beautiful as it gets?
