Ape Person

By Billy Rock Mitchell

On the edge of the edge the confused ape person stared at that mazey hedge

They could see other apes wondering around

They were all lost

But some were lost lost

And some were lost and found

As they all were confused stumbling around

This hedge maze was big

Mind shatteringly massive

The ape person could see it all

Every corner, every curve

Every nook, every cranny

The hedge and its lost monkey citizens stretched past the horizon

In every biome and every habitat

They walked, talked and sat

Some happy, laughing and cheerful

Some sad, angry and fearful

Some played games, danced and sang songs

Some cracked bones, snarled and did wrongs

Some ran away, withered and did hide

Some invented things, chariots, tools and wings to glide

The ape person on the edge of the edge scratched their head

Seeing everything was exhausting

They longed for bed

But the ape person could not look away

From this cosmic comedia dell'arte

It made them happy

It made them sad

It made them angry

It made them glad

At other parts of this endless maze

Were some truly mad chimps in a crazed haze

They built effigies of their own gorilla faces

Demanding trinkets from all the other apes races

They piled their nice nacs high

As other ape folks fought and did die

Simply to please them and get a piece of chiefs treasure

Making their own hoard, monopolising all pleasure

The mad king orangutangs ordered these bullies to do silly things

Asking them to toil in destructive crafts

Shredding the intricate structure they all lived in

They set fires and bashed brains

Toxified the hedge, essence they drained

The ape person on the edge of the edge was losing balance on that ledge

As they teetered and wobbled up high

They saw a scary vision on the horizon

They saw fire burning the sky

The red glow of ape madness was afflicting that hedge maze

Flames zigzagged across the land

Turning it into a fiery cage

As the ape person began to lose their grip fully

As they knew that they were about to fall

Not wishing to wander round this maze lost and grief full

They aimed for the chirpy lost and found monkey pals

The ones who looked at the stars and danced with their guys and gals

The ape person decided if they were to stay in this confusing place

They would look at the fire and the madness with a smile on their face

The ape person inside that cheerful wedge of hedge, danced, sang, laughed and chattered

Because when it came down to it they decided in this confusing place that this was what really mattered

The ape person once isolated and on the edge

Was now with the bonobo boppers

This ape person was smiling

This ape person was cheerful

This ape person was lost

This ape person was found

The ape person on that vast maze round
