Another Countdown

By Kevin Masmela

The LA city wind collides against our skin

as we countdown the seconds til’ the new year

sixteen til’ the world gets to quote unquote

reset

An idea that should’ve happened yesterday

but begins in fifteen cuz’ time can be controlling

The end of (x) + the beginning of (y) = ( )

fourteen seconds til’ you finally decide to

stop ( insert addiction here )

start ( insert replacement here )

if only we knew that time is not perfect

“the perfect time” does not exist

& floats in oblivion for another eleven seconds...

I can hear the chatter of last year’s tenth resolution

crawling it’s way out of a page in my journal

so I continue counting

eight seconds til’ it ends

seven seconds til’ it begins

six seconds to make amends

with this year’s list of things I should’ve done more of ...

Five seconds til’ the ball drops

four seconds til’ we finally stop

doubting ourselves three seconds

to finally start loving ourselves

two seconds to understand you are good enough

& that last second to fully realize

you always were.
