Powerless. Bullied. Growing up, I was often excluded and alone, mostly because of my flamboyant personality. Everyone around me had preconceived notions about my character without even getting to know me. My resolve was fragile, and I could never find the strength to speak up for myself. Though extroverted, I thought I had friends—until I realized my yearning for connection had me clinging to anyone offering the slightest attention. Then high school theatre changed everything for the better.
I have always had a connection with theatre; I spent my childhood writing stories and reading them aloud to my parents—a way for me to express my own voice through literature. I knew theatre was my place when I performed in Pride and Prejudice. I analyzed every line of Mr. Collins', grasping how essential it is for a message to be heard, for me and my team. Theatre is a reflection of society at its finest and has taught me that empathy is the heart of connection. In a democracy, we must strive to understand one another. Every time I step on a stage, it becomes my duty to connect our society through the power of performance.
In Romeo and Juliet, where I played Romeo Montague, the story I wanted the audience to take away is that young love will always be beautiful. Young people’s feelings and emotions are powerful; however, they still need parental guidance. I have so many friends my age whose parents don't allow them to date others based on their wealth, where they come from, and
sometimes just because of their ethnicity. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet killed themselves because their parents didn’t support their love, and only because of a rivalry that had nothing to do with them. I hoped that my colleagues and I, by presenting that story, would help some parents see young relationships differently. Theatre also gives technicians and crew a voice

through their artistry in set construction, lighting, and projections, and their work was a major reason Romeo and Juliet was a success at my high school. The more I became involved in the program, the more my character evolved.
As the years passed, theatre taught me not only how to analyze characters and embody them, but also how to become myself. The analytical skills I gained allowed me to gain a profound understanding of my individuality, what I wanted to do with my life, and what I needed to accomplish. Theatre teaches you to step into untold tales and instills empathy and honor in everyone’s stories.
There are so many stories that deserve to be told, but need to be told with care and sensitivity. Theatre has taught me to understand and to see humanity in everyone around me, but then came a point when I had to empathize with myself, which led me to realize that younger me
craved acceptance, safety, and a sense of brotherhood. I'm proud to say theatre gave me the courage to stop chasing people who wronged me and start embracing the idea that my people will eventually come.
After some time, five radiant humans appeared in my life. These are my found family: one who will inspire through theatre, another who will heal through opera, a young mentor who will shape future generations, a stellar visual artist who will continue to capture the beauty of life through his camera lenses, and, lastly, one who will power homes through nuclear innovation. The love I feel for them extends to all humanity, compelling me to support and uplift everyone's voice. Instead of hate and anger, we need togetherness and unity in society. I’m a firm believer that you don’t have to know people to love and care for them. In a democracy, everyone's opinions and thoughts, even if we disagree, need to be heard; we must foster these principles. Democracy and theatre are two sides of the same coin, and I’m grateful this coin has chosen me

to be one of its vessels—a vessel that will enrich and inspire the world through the magic of theatre.
