In Praise of No False Beauty

My soulcarrier's voice is nothing like sweet melodic flows,

There is no gentle grace within her tone,

I dare not call her the sun or flawless great light.

For truth in her is greater than any man's praise.

Her scent is nothing like fine cologne,

Her laughter isn’t sweet, it can be very annoying;

At times I’d rather sit in solitude

Then hear her on an exhausting day.

Her toes are like a graveyard

waiting for the dead to be resurrected.

Her beauty is not like the rising sun,

Her lips are rough, like gravel to the touch,

Her presence is like crows,

loud and restless beneath the evening sky.

Yet still I love her in every flaw;

For in her truth there lives no trace of falsehood,

And that alone makes her more precious to me.

Soulcarrier : A person who carries a part of another's inner life so deeply that their presence or absence reshapes who that person is.

The Caged Crow

If I can't be yours to love endlessly,

then the sun belongs to me now.

Your beauty means nothing to me

but a grotesque vow.

I will worship the light you could never allow.

I planted roses where your footsteps died,

and watched their thorns inherit the soil.

I caged my desires for you,

like crows too cruel for this world.

Your voice sounded like a country in recession,

beautiful promises collapsing between the figures.

My Unwashed Lover

You came into my life smelling of

the sourness of yesterday.

Your sweater carried evidence of every

dead thing you tried to bury

a crime scene I tried to hide.

Your hair, I mistook for silk, stood like a

rebellion;

your breath could empty a room.

I have begged you to meet water, not as

a sacrifice,

but to let the shower claim its victory.

Yet you look at cleanliness like an enemy

waiting to take your kingdom.

Still, somehow, beneath the war between soap and you,

I find my love for you something rare.

Perhaps love is not smelling of roses,

but opening a window,

holding your nose.

A Thief Called Nature

Nature looks pleasing to the eyes of men,

each holds a ledger filled with praise.

But I see it as a thief

stealing your beauty, then calling it its own.

Your voice falls like rain upon the dry earth,

softening every silence it encounters.

Your eyes are dawn's sky to behold,

holding a light that morning cannot keep.

Your hair falls gently upon your shoulders,

like leaves too perfect for this world,

dark as midnight before the stars appear.

Your lips are roses waiting to be touched

and your smile makes winter feel,

less austere.

Your hands are warm enough to shelter mine,

your laughter turns the quiet into melorapture.

Yet beauty is not what makes you dear;

It is the peace the world once called vain.

Melorapture : an ecstatic, almost rapturous feeling created by melody, voice, or laughter.

Epitaph

Cursed be the tongue

that mocks these words;

may it forever stumble

upon the beauty it cannot understand.
