A Heart That Obeyed

"Let's get out of this town", she said,

With hopeful eyes and a heavy heart.

She was destined for things far greater,

Greater than anything I could muster.

I watched her bloom, knowing I would never

Know to swallow worlds whole like her.

She was bigger than this town, and we knew it,

Bigger than the evils that fueled this dark pit.

Into the woods she fled, and I followed suit,

To take in the wilderness, and choke out the gloom,

She owned the wild, and her reign began,

Taming the feral to its knees on command.

The world on a leash, pandering to her demands,

She would rule it all, I had no doubt about it.

She said to me one day, "I'll tell you my secrets,

I'll show you my life, my soul and my regrets".

"I'll give you my dreams, my flesh and my heart,

I'll tell you everything, but you'll find it's all too fleeting.

And then I'll stop your heart from ever again beating".

Yet I followed her in, as she closed the door.

And sure enough, the spell began to fade,

My eyes locked on her, and my heart obeyed.
