A girl called rude

A girl called rude
You called me rude so many times that the syllables etched themselves into my ribs.
Rude.
Rude.
Rude.
It could have been printed on my weeping childish soul,
a brand they give to animals who won't stand still for the needle,
who flinch when hands reach without asking.
I learned manners the way a trapped thing learns the shape of its cage.
I softened my voice until it dissolved.
I swallowed my questions until they grew spines and climbed back up my throat.
But still, the word followed me,
a small, sharp stone in every shoe I wore.
You made me, then called the bite rude.
You starved me, then punished me for being hungry.
You do not starve a thing for years
and name its hunger ugly.
You handed me broken glass and expected me to kiss the shards,
Then they called me difficult when
My lips turned red.
Rude.
That must be all I am,
Because who cares to learn
the soft of a wild animal.
Who cares when it’s so simple to see
The selfish, arrogant, rude beast.
Rude…
And a monster doesn’t
Care right?
A rude girl doesn’t
Care for others, right?
Never thinks
Never gets.
Let it be the only language I have left.
Let rude stitch itself across my chest
like a surname I never chose
but will carry to the grave.
Let them whisper it,
let them throw it like a stone
At my battered body.
I will catch it.
I will polish it.
I will wear it
until it becomes a mirror
, and they shall finally see.
This is the best poem
