A Foreigner

Original Submission by Janah Govender

A Foreigner

A foreigner in our land.

We speak of freedom but

Yini…

Unity? Uthando? Kutlwano?

Sifike njani apha,

hoekom het ons baklei?

Like

A Foreigner in our own land

Before 1994,

Dompas mo seatleng se le sengwe

bravery in the other. And

Despite feeling like

A foreigner in our own land

Love was always carried,

ezinhliziyweni zethu,

Wherever we went

It followed.

Except now when we see

A foreigner in our own land.

Kungazelelwe, the potholes,

The unemployment and

The crime is somehow someone

Other than corruption.

Gopola nako

When We felt like

A foreigner in our own land

Wondering what was happening to the hope.

Babheka nxazonke

And they saw the problem

Us.

A foreigner in their owned land.

Ngombana ukususa

Us

Sou op wonderbaarlike wyse oplos

Mathata a bona ohle

Kubayini ?

When we came from the same soil,

noNkulunkulu oyedwa

It was never theirs

Never ours

Not anyone

Obona abafowethu nodadewethu

As foreigners,

On God’s land.
