About the Work
"A Day In June" delves into the theme of nostalgia, using the changing weather as a metaphor for the passage of time. The poem's mood is reflective and tinged with a gentle melancholy. Through vivid imagery of a cooling breeze and the scent of petrichor, Siddiqui evokes a sense of longing and introspection. The poem's narrative flows seamlessly, guiding the reader through memories that are both personal and universal, inviting contemplation of one's own journey through time.
A Day In June
Original Submission by Fareha Fatima Siddiqui
June 20,
I look outside of my window as the sky slowly changes shades.
As the blazing sun is shrouded by heavy grey clouds, and as
4 pm starts to look like 6.
The wind is no longer angry and cruel, and has started to cool down.
I watch as the kind breeze brushes off the leaves of the peepul tree and reaches me at last.
It carries the scent of petrichor,
And as it reaches my lungs, my body wants to grasp at it as one would upon seeing an old friend.
And suddenly I travel back in time, Stopping briefly at different points in life, suddenly aware of the distance between my past and present.
Memory is an old abandoned building with paint chipping away at the walls, and I sit there looking to build a home in the debris.
And suddenly the passage of time becomes too real, and I’m left to think of how today will become yesterday. And I will visit my old self again, as a spectator.
But when I stop again somewhere in the past, I hope I remember my way back.
That I will write again of what occurs, and not as I do with every poem, say that I will remember it in the morning and fall asleep having already forgotten it.
