Them

By Mehana Agnihotri

One second is how

Long it took

When the ground beneath

Violently shook

The kingdom burnt down

As the walls fell down

Death and destruction standing

Before me wearing

Their daunting crowns

They smiled solemnly

And brought me close

And whispered in my ear

The secret everyone knows

"We come for all"

They said

"You aren't the only one

Who felt that we shouldn't

Have made the choice"

The two sisters thought

This was enough

"But what about the fact

That I lost what I loved?"

Soon grief came

And engulfed me in her embrace

It was coldly warm

And wiped the tears from my face

"My child,"

She consoled

"This is the cycle of life

To welcome the new

And say goodbye to the old"

I understood their advice

But acceptance was

Still far fetched

As the remains of my kingdom

Beyond me stretched

The city of gold

Now filled with beggars

All to welcome the new

And say goodbye to the old

The cycle of life

Is a cruel thing

It's claws that tear

From the outside in

A necessary evil perhaps?

Or a chance to

Reflect on our sins ?
