Love

By Kaveri Talukder

"Love."

Pure as fresh snow;

The colour of innocence,

Powdered by a soft blush.

They tell you

How wonderful it feels;

How you glide through the world

Wearing rose-tinted...

Everything.

They say that you can't help yourself,

From looking for them;

From caring about them.

And they make it sound so pretty...

Like a jewelled

Dagger....

I have built my self-control

On years of self-loathing,

And now all of my hard work

Will slip away?

Is this really what everyone

Dreams of?

If you hate control that much

That you romanticise

Relinquishing all of it,

Then why don't you just give it to me?

A jewelled dagger

Might be seen as

Just another pretty accessory,

But it was also made to

Be used against people;

Just as much as it was

Meant to protect others.

It still ends up tainted in blood;

And the deep red of blood

Can also look like

The most precious ruby

Under the right lighting.
