3:33 AM Image

She swore she had insomnia, convinced her heart was condemned to spend every dark hour twisting and bending beneath the bitter, static chill of the night.

She believed she was the sole, exhausted spectator of her own vigil, staring up into the dark as the rest of the world dissolved into a quiet slumber.

But the tiredness was never in her limbs.

It was anchored deep inside her chest. A heavy, silent weight that pulled her under without her ever knowing she had gone.

Tonight, she sits up in the gloom. She fixes her gaze in the long mirror, resting across her bed.

The room is drowning in shadow, and at first, the absurdity of it hits her like a sudden, nervous punch.

A quiet, breathy giggle escapes her lips. She whispers to the stillness:

"What is that?"

Her smile drops.

The glass does not hold a stranger, nor does it hold the girl who thought she spent every midnight awake.

She stares directly into eyes that feel unnaturally heavy— looking at a posture she does not keep, at an expression that clearly does not belong to her mind.

The face in the frame looks exhausted yet thoroughly rested. It bears the unmistakable marks of a life that lived while she was tucked away in the dark.

Whatever looks back at her brings a sudden wave of repulsion, a cold shock that fractures her spine.

She had not been lying awake all those nights.

Her true, suppressed self had been fast asleep— safely locked behind closed doors— while the quiet shift occurred, while other hands took the wheel, inherited her skin, and walked through the dark in her place.

She sits paralyzed in the stillness, entirely detached from the body she thought was hers alone, watching the glass reveal the silent crowd living beneath her skin.
