Witness

An impossible dream, disconcertingly within reach.

She stands witness to it, heart and mind at siege.

Tied up by circumstance, forbidden by principle,

Irrational by choice, perhaps, the most miserable.

His choice or mine, a voice whispers. Certainly his,

But is it really a choice if he doesn’t know it exists?

The creases around his eyes deepen as the smile reaches his eyes

Catching hers, deepening the disillusion, the lies,

Casting ideals, ideals that are not real

Evanescent thoughts and a hope that remains concealed.
