Within the Margins
You learn a lot about people through the pages of their favorite books; you learn their hopes and fears through the art and notes within the margins.
The soft click of a lamp and the nostalgic flutter of pages echoed through the dim room, whose only occupant was a teenage girl: Melanie. Melanie wasn’t much different from many girls her age: she attended high school five days a week; she played sports in the evenings; she went out with friends on weekends. What made Melanie different was that she hated it. All of it.
A small sigh escaped her rosy lips as Melanie lay on her bed as she did every afternoon after school. Melanie’s forehead creased slightly as she stared down at the open book lying on her white ruffled bedspread. She gazed at the pages, eagerly waiting for them to continue their story. She glanced over the gallery of paintings in the margins, shimmering in the flickering light of the lamp on the nightstand beside her.
“Where was I?” Melanie muttered to herself as she ran her fingers gingerly over the shimmering vines she’d painted in the corners of the pages.
A smile slowly fought its way to the corners of her lips as she located the sentence where she was to continue.
Fantasy. That had always been one of Melanie’s greatest interests. She loved painting shimmering windows into the places in which she was reading, hoping one day she’d be able to open them to escape from this world. To escape the vehement pressure of her grades and the disappointment of her races that continued to build, brick by brick, until she felt the suffocating weight of the world balancing unsteadily on her shoulders. She desperately needed to escape every droning voice swirling around in her head telling her that she wasn’t good enough. So, Melanie read. Reading was her gateway into the worlds she wished were her own, though reading was only a temporary solution.
The hushed slam of the book echoed through the room as Melanie slowly sat up with a sniffle. A tear slid slowly down her pale cheek, beckoning those welling up in her dim green eyes to follow in the glistening path down her face.
“What did I ever do,” Melanie whispered, her chest tightening as she gazed around the bleak room she occupied, “to deserve this. Why can’t I just have a life like them?” She tossed the book in her shaky hands beside her. It flopped open with a soft thud.
“Was it something I–” Melanie’s voice was barely audible, as she noticed the painting in the margin of the book she’d cast beside her. The painting was small–just that of an arrow occupying the side of the page.

Thousands of individuals were gathered in a large room. The air itself almost seemed to glisten as the light of the setting sun reflected off the tree in the center of the space. Everyone in attendance seemed to be dressed in expertly crafted masquerade costumes that ranged from mermaids with flowing sequin tails, to vampires with metallic copper masks and flowing capes.

When the scene faded back into view, there was no longer a lively ballroom that seemed to sparkle in the fading sun, but instead a small cottage. The cottage was entirely void of occupants, though the atmospheric warmth was unmistakable. Miniature dragons flapped through the halls, sneezing sparks that glistened like fireflies, but didn’t burn. The cottage had the indescribable allure of a perfect fairytale frozen in time.
As the scene began to fade into oblivion, the red oak door slowly creaked open, and in stepped a young girl wearing a sleeveless dusty rose dress. She twirled around the cottage with the grace of a dancer who had never had a care in the world. She jumped elegantly into a burgundy armchair just outside of the dining hall, and grinned luminously as a small dragon perched on the arm of the chair next to her.
“I can’t believe that my life was completely average last week,” she chimed softly to her scaly companion, “my mother read me fairytales all the time, and I always dreamed that I’d live a magical life one day. I guess I brought that dream to life didn’t I?”
The dragon curled up beside her and gazed up lovingly, as though to say, “I’m glad you made your wishes come true.”
She smiled sweetly as she thought back to the paths her life had taken over the past few weeks. “All I had to do was create the magic I wished to see, and it grew!”

All I had to do was create the magic I wished to see.
Melanie felt another tear rush down her cheek as the memory faded. She still vividly recalled this novel as if she had lived in the whimsical world herself. As if she and the girl from the cottage were one and the same. Part of her still needed that.
Melanie slowly rose from her ruffled bed and retrieved the primrose novel from her shelf. “This book showed me a perfect fairytale life. Maybe it can help me make that wish come true.”
A grin spread across Melanie’s pale cheeks, which had long been void of happiness, as she slowly flipped through the pages, filling the room with its nostalgic sound. She traced her fingers along the twinkling paintings, the tingling warmth she had consistently longed for running through her veins.
“I should have figured it out…” Melanie slowly spun around, as if she had entirely forgotten the bleak room in which she now stood, “none of the characters I’ve read about were born into their ideal fairytale life; none of them merely wished for a happily ever after and received it. Why should I be any different?”
Melanie’s eyes shone with determination as she scanned her room, “All magic starts somewhere.”
Leaping across the room, Melanie lifted the blinds of the windows covering most of her wall, letting the afternoon sunlight dance through the glass. The light filled the room with sparkles, just as it had in the book in Melanie’s hand.
Brick by brick, Melanie felt the weight of the world slowly lift from her shoulders, and the grief constantly crushing her heart begrudgingly loosen its grip. Trivial changes, such as the twinkling paintings in the margins of a book, eventually become a magical tale, filled with depictions of personality, love, hate, hopes and fears.
“All I have to do is create the magic I wish to see,” Melanie whispered to herself as she picked up her paintbrush, and began designing a note in the margins of the book that initiated her long-awaited happily ever after.
