Whoever Wins

And there it was, the moment

Every note I had practiced

Every meal I've sacrificed

for my voice to sound like an angel

as I stood on the stage

All eyes were on me

This was my moment

And it came out of the shadows

The monster ready for a fight

Creeping in from backstage

It gripped my throat until it was dry and tight

My heart hammered against my rib cage

My hands were shaking, my knees were loose,

Terror took its place in my chest

I want to run and hide!

Letting the monster win felt right

But as the music started

The room was silent

It was me against the monster

It was never about winning the medal

It was about winning the war

The war that I fought from a young age

With a monster that wouldn’t let me do my best

Whoever wins takes the final bow

And I am not giving up the mic

Let the song begin…
