Poem 8 for Hashtag Kalakar

White Flowers on the Path

The path was quiet

Except for the breeze

That ran ahead of me

Tugging at my scarf

And bringing the faintest scent

Of something sweet

I looked down

And there they were-

White wildflowers

Scattered on the forest path

As if someone had been waiting

And laid out a welcome

Just for me

I stepped carefully at first

Not wanting to disturb them

Each one soft and pale

Like small stars

That had fallen in daylight

Then I smiled

Because they reminded me

Of another time

Another place

When I was small

And bare-footed

Running across the front yard

Where the parijata tree

Showered white flowers

Every morning

And we gathered them

Like tiny treasures

Their fragrance clinging

To my hands

As I held them close

That house is gone now

The tree too

But here-

In this quiet place

I walk on a soft carpet

Of white blossoms

And dried leaves underfoot

The evening light

Peeking through the trees

Warming my shoulders

As if to say

You are still welcome

You are still home
