When did I grow up?

When was it?

Was it when my clothes didn’t fit me anymore?

Was it when my hair grew past my shoulders?

Was it when I didn’t recognise myself in front of the mirror?

Was it when I stopped biting my nails?

Was it the stretch marks on my waist?

Was it the fading scar near my eye?

Was it when I tried to perfect the wing of my eyeliner?

Was it when the speckles decided to make my face their home?

Was it the comb I saw after I brushed my hair?

Was it when I had to paint my own nails?

Was it when I had no one to fold the sleeves of my shirt?

Was it when my skin didn’t feel like it belonged to me?

Was it when I could light a match without flinching?

Was it when dark spaces no longer frightened me?

Was it when being alone made it easier to accept things?

Was it when I stopped dreaming?

Was it when I noticed that I didn’t fit in anywhere I went?

Was it when waking up became a chore?

Was it all the unexplainable feelings inside me?

Was it when swallowing food became difficult?

Was it when I knew good things don’t last?

Was it when I started wondering what I’m here for?

Was it the agonising observations around me?

Was it when I realised my parents were just as vulnerable as I was?

Was it when I understood that it is human to feel all this?
