I see you

in the distance.

When did you

walk so far

ahead?

My breath is a wisp,

a gasp

on the wind

lost before I reach you.

And all I can do

is see you.

You're looking at me-

When did your eyes

change?

Your mouth is open-

is it surprise

or a silent scream?

I am trying,

trying

to touch you,

hold you

once again

but ash

slips through

my fingers.

I don't know

when the fire

became an ember

and when ember

turned to ash.

I don't know

when you let go

of my hand.

I don't know

how to match my steps

with yours

as we come

to this fork

in the road.

I wish

I could say

I'd see you

on the other side.

But you're still walking

now back turned

as my hand raises

for one last

voiceless

goodbye.
