What the Door Learned by Joe Lyimo

You didn't slam it.

That was the cruel part.

You closed it soft, the way you'd close a book you

never planned to open again.

For weeks I spoke to the space where you

stood. The kettle still boiled for two.

My mouth kept making the shape of your

name like a habit the body forgot to bury.

They say time heals.

Time doesn't heal. It just widens the room until the missing

has more space to sit, and I have more floor to sweep.
