What Is Architecture To Me?

By Tanaya Manchekar

Architecture to me is about re- creating space. It means to imagine “light weight” experiences in personal or urban context.” Light weight” may not be in terms of structure but this experience can be felt through Fenestrations, colors, furniture etc.

I recently re- designed my bedroom. Initially it was a plain, beige colored room with walls cladded with tiles (very similar to the washrooms too).

To change that space, I had very limited options within that space and a tight budget. I did very minimal changes, like, the modification of a double bed to a single bed and a change in its orientation. This helped me achieve a more open space and less burdened light and ventilation. This small change brought in so much vision to what all I could do to that space to change its experience. Simple white colour was something i imagined and introduced a yellow wall to my room. The yellow looks amazing during the day. At night the yellow wall becomes a screen to the play of car headlights. All the laminates of wardrobes are painted white and white colored curtains are introduced to the room. An addition of a long mirror makes the space look more spacious. These minimal transformations have made the room a contemporary space with simple lines and colors. After these modifications the space suddenly got its own character which made it even more calm and workable.

Another exciting transformation was made to the room for a college project. I re-imagined the room to be a space in the multiverse. So, the idea was to replicate MARVEL in a regular bedroom space. To create this experience, only a few curtains and fairy lights were added.

The purpose of mentioning this space and its multiple transformations is showing how you can play around even a smaller space in terms of its intangible architectural values.
