It’s strange, isn’t it — how you can practice a line hundreds, maybe even thousands, of times, yet all that confidence disappears the moment you face the crowd. Or maybe your mind goes blank the instant a single frown in the audience catches your eye. It’s a feeling we all know — that quiet fear of being judged or falling short of what’s expected. After all, we’re only human, stumbling through moments that test our courage. But have you ever realized that, as you stand backstage preparing, your mind slips in two simple words — “what if?” — words that can either be the chains that hold us back or the wings that help us soar?

We often find ourselves asking, “What if I fail?”, “What if they laugh at me?”, “What if I’m not good enough?” These quiet doubts echo in our minds, holding us back from even taking the very first step. But who’s to say these things will actually happen when life itself is full of mysteries? We get so caught up in the fear of what could go wrong that we forget what could go right. Every opportunity we avoid becomes another moment of wondering what could’ve been. What if you actually do great on that speech you thought you’d mess up? What if you inspired someone in the crowd to do something great? What if things turn out even better than you expected? When we start realizing that these things aren’t as impossible as they seem, fear begins to fade — and we begin to shine through. That’s the true power of “what if”: depending on how we choose to see it, it can build walls that isolates us in our comfort zone or open doors to something greater than we imagined.

Ultimately, when you catch yourself giving in to the fear creeping in, pause and reflect for a better “what if.” Because what if this is the moment everything starts to change? And what if this is your chance to grow, to surprise yourself, to rise above the fear? Although the words may be the same, their meaning shifts when you choose courage over doubt. In the end, the difference between staying still and moving forward all begins with this one small, powerful thought—"What if I can?"
