We Ran A Long Race

You picked the thorns from my bed of roses,

Painted new colours in the black and the white,

Held up my world with all your fingers,

And gave me someone to run to at night.

And we ran a long race,

Climbed the hill and came back down,

And if the ground ever gave away,

We made sure to wipe each other’s frown.

Then we reached the finish line,

And as I watched you tire and grey,

I made a web with my tears and hope,

And trapped you in those strings and prayed.

But the one in heaven shook his head in a no,

Took you back and left my heart bare,

So I squeezed my eyes and let you go,

Knowing you would be happier up there.
