Unfulfilled Spirits
By Divya Devarajan
I see those lights, flicker and flair
with the wind it swivels, rocking as in a boat
A few steps to it, I see the glint
One two three- it grows within my eyesight
Taking a swipe at it, to grab on as for a firefly
It mocks me like a play- flying, skipping and teasing
'Who are you', I ask, curious of their charm
'Are you one's joy, or the light of unfulfilled wishes
The cry of unspoken words or
the warmth of momentary cuddles?'
'We are but parts of incomplete spirits'
They say, with sadness of deep despair
and then I see, in its eyes the thirst of incomplete birth
Of sudden demise, of unwritten vows
Of the sticky notes for tomorrow,
the reminders of the day's events
The grandeur of a future, some ten years away
All but ceased in a moment's dismissal
We swim alone along through this space
To see our words remembered and repeated
To quench our desire for living a life,
To see those dreams complete, to guide the kin ahead
To search for unfinished answers
And to rest once it's time to go far away
(In ode to those kindered spirits who leave this world as quickly as they came, without any warning, without any last words; just leaving because fate has it's own way)
