Under the Willow Tree
Among the milky swathe of clouds,
The brilliant sunshine poured in
From the crannies between leaves.
The undisturbed willow tree,
Glinted under the rays of light.
On the carven hardwood I was,
When I spotted an old man,
Rest up by the aged tree.
He took a puff from his pipe
And made rings with his smoke.
I saw him lost in thought
Gazing at the soul of serene water.
A brown leather ascot cap,
With clean polished shoes,
And a shirt with no wrinkles he had.
Like a statue he was,
Unbothered by the sound of crickets.
I saw a rolled tabloid aside of him
With the grand title ‘Daily News ’
What an elegant man of age I thought.
The meddlesome mind of mine
Edged neared to the man,
“Excuse me, good sir
I saw you from behind the tree”
I said euphoniously
“Oh! My child,
How nice of thee to stop by
Never a one would approach
A man in his eighties”
He stated with a bijou smile.
“Sir, rather confused you seem
Wonder why?”
Inquisitively I asked.
While I hunkered down
Beneath the shades of willow leaves.
“Not a man of modernity
But rather traditionalism,
Never a day I thought
How things would change?
From quietude to disorder
But oh! How the young man utters
Emboldens many a heart
What an astounding lad! I mutter
His sagacity enthrals my mind
For I have never heard such words of wisdom
Unmatched his courage for his age
Oh my! How I would avail his suggestion
A well-raised kid of golden he is
Blessed I am, to witness such grandeur
Kings to queens to presidents
I’ve lived throughout
But never once seen a young boy
With such charisma”
The good old sir
Spoke of the young man,
How amazed I was!
To hear such praises from him.
Never have I ever heard,
Approval of the young from old folks.
“Fascinating to hear such praises
But sir, what is it you ponder of the other?”
Dazed mind of mine, asked.
“My child,
Neither hate nor love
I proffer either
Years went, a tedious life I have spent
From now, I shall sway no more in customs.”
He brought the pipe closer to his dry lips
And smiled with his eyes tightly closed.
The gruntled mind of mine,
Bid the old gentlemen farewell
And left the willow tree behind.
A lingered flower on the verge of withering
An unbloomed flower on the verge of bloom.
Mother Nature sends out her workers
To pick nectar from the newly arrived beauty,
While the other breathes its last.
