Ugly, Beautiful She

They said she was ugly

because she was fat.

They said she was ugly

because she was dark.

They said she was less

because she’s a woman.

She listened and heard,

but did not pay heed.

Instead, she asked her heart,

what truth to believe.

Her heart answered her,

told the truth as it were.

She was the colour of ripened wheat,

so she could stand better the heat.

An apple she was, sweet and round,

an adorable pug, not a wolfhound.

A woman she is; proudly, a woman,

and without her, there is no man.

She carries the light of the sun inside her,

seen only by a fortunate few.

Her heart sits true in her round, dark figure,

and her feminine beauty shines through.
