“Traces left behind”

Back to where it all begins,

where memories still drift on quiet winds.

It holds the echoes of our laughter and stories,

giggling through all our silly late-night quarries.

I turned my back away just once,

though leaving traces of you was never my want.

Each step I take the time unwind,

while shadows of memory trail a few steps behind,

hoping, perhaps our paths might realign.

Here I am, speaking from the “you”

who never left my view

the smile my eyes can never unfound.

In my dreams, your chair still leans like before,

part of a routine that exists no more.

I reach to greet, my heart skips a beat,

because now there’s someone else

sitting in your seat.
