Tomorrow
By Sara Maria Bastine
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Lizzie”.
His breathless whisper felt more faint by the day.
I wished for his grip to be tighter.
I looked at my brother.
Had his face always been so drained?
His sparkling hazels stopped me from welling up.
They still looked so divine.
The fear clothed me every night I left Hopkins,
The dreadful fear of loosing him.
I tried to pursue my piano lessons.
I tried to pay attention at school.
I tried to smile for my parents.
But I couldn’t, not without Danny.
I looked around his room,
Still didn’t get used to the awful silence.
I tried to picture him with his drums.
I tried to picture him in his sweats.
I tried to picture him with me.
But why did they all seem so blurry?
I did not know that night was going to be his last.
The last time I’ll hear his voice,
The last time I’ll feel his hands on mine,
The last time I’ll see those hazels.
I now know that he is finally at peace.
No more did he gasp for breath.
No more were his eyes watery.
No more was he in pain.
My eye caught his clenched fist.
It was a note for me,
I couldn’t hold my tears in when I read,
“ I’ll see you tomorrow, Lizzie”.
