To Be A God

How gracious of you, human —

for not crushing me as I crossed

the forcibly peeled skin, the deep cracks

running like canyons across your wrist.

Instead you picked me up

and gently threw me to the ground,

hoping, maybe, that I'd survive.

Six legs, less than a milligram,

and still I flipped —

back to the dirt, legs to the sky,

sky, less sky, no sky at all.

Impossible to right myself.

I feel my life loosening from me

And I wonder what my god was thinking,

Letting me live one more moment–

as if I owed her a meaning for it.

It's appalling, really:

how she needed to do one good thing

just to feel less like a monster.

The dirt is cold. My legs don't move.

Is she a god at all?
