The world, uncaptured

Original Submission by Divya Moodley

The World, Uncaptured

I want to see the world

before I learn to call it ordinary,

before mountains become something

I scroll past between conversations,

before the ocean is reduced

to a blue line on a screen.

I want to meet the horizon

where it is still impossible to reach.

I want roads without directions,

windows wound all the way down,

wind tangling itself through my hair

until I stop trying to fix it.

I want to run until my lungs burn

and laugh because they do,

to feel my heartbeat

and know exactly why it is racing.

I want to go somewhere

my name means nothing.

Somewhere the faces are unfamiliar

and the language sits differently in my mouth,

where I can stand among strangers

and somehow feel less like one.

I want to collect stories

instead of souvenirs.

I want to see what waits

behind the walls I was told not to climb,

beyond the fences drawn

around the edges of my courage.

I want to step through every doorway

I once mistook for a boundary

and discover that the world

was never as small as I was afraid it was.

And when something beautiful appears—

something wild and fleeting,

a creature slipping silently

through the morning mist—

I don't want to reach for my camera.

I want to stand still.

I want to watch it disappear

without asking it to stay,

without turning wonder into evidence.

Let the moment belong

only to the people who were there,

to the cold air in their lungs,

to the silence that needed no photograph.

Because maybe we were never meant

to document every beautiful thing.

Maybe some things are meant

to pass through us

like sunlight through an open window—

warm for a moment,

gone before we can close our hands around it,

but leaving us brighter

for having felt it.

I want to feel everything:

the fear before the leap,

the salt of the sea,

the ache of goodbye,

the ridiculous joy of running

with no destination worth naming.

I want scraped knees and wrong turns,

midnight laughter and unfamiliar streets,

the kind of memories

that arrive without permission.

And one day,

I want to look around

and realise I have no idea

how I got here.

A football rolling beneath my feet,

mountains rising impossibly around me,

strangers shouting my name

as though they have known me forever,

the air so thin and clean

it feels like the first breath

I have ever taken.

And I will laugh.

Not because everything is perfect,

but because for once

I am not waiting for life

to begin.

I am inside it.

The world is moving.

The wind is moving.

I am moving.

And for one glorious moment,

I do not need to capture it,

explain it,

or make it last.

I only need to feel it—

to see the world,

to draw closer,

to lose myself in something larger,

to feel my own life

rushing wildly through me.

And when the moment is gone,

I will let it go.

Because I was there.

And I was alive.
