The Wild Flower

Why does the wild flower bloom with a freer, brighter grace,

Than those kept behind fences, shaped by another’s hand?

The maiden who loves may soften beneath love’s gentle warmth,

Not from the world’s judgment, but the care she understands.

She bends not as the willow bends before the storm,

But opens like a rose where tender affections thrive.

Yet strange are the eyes that praise the meadow’s beauty,

Then pluck the flower and ask why it no longer survives.

They loved the wildness first, the untamed and the true,

Then wondered why the bloom no longer seemed the same.

For love may change a heart, yet never should erase

The very spark that once made it worthy of its name.
