The Wait
By Kaavya Silambanan
Grey skies hung heavy with rain clad clouds
Glinting under the streaks of sunlight
That dared break through the stoney cover.
The sea slowly swallowing the extinguishing sun
As the sky waited in anticipation of what is to come.
A chill swept the air getting rid of any remnants
Of the warm summer day that now lay to waste.
A clean dark slate for the water to play.
The silhouette of a young boy stood trembling
On the wooden stern of a sinking boat
Holding his hand up to the sky,
Catching the last of the rays vanishing into the night.
The whale songs he had longed for were heard from afar
No longer were they the siren calls he had loved
But a lament for the boy braving the wrath of the sea.
Intrigue had never been so cruelly punished.
The hasty wind blew through his soul
As the waves grew closer with impatience
His life lay hanging on a single jump
To the lone Boulder that had weathered storms.
The Boulder lay quiet, like a silent promise to save him
As the waves crashed into its plinth and retreated
As though it was warned to not stay
It was the age old battle of the earth versus the sea.
Time had been engulfed by the dark
Now nothing remained but the Boy and the Boulder
The chasm of sea widening steadily between them
With a deep breath of faith, he jumped;
Clinging on for his life, the Boulder had kept its promise
All there was left to do, now, was wait,
Wait for the morning light to break through the clouds
And wait for the tomorrow where he would be saved.
