The Unsung Sentry

He wears the colors of the land,

A rifle steady in his hand,

While I stand here, miles away,

Counting nights and counting days.

The train pulled out, the whistle cried,

I hid my tears and waved goodbye,

For in his eyes I clearly saw

A love for country, strong and raw.

They cheer his valor, fierce for the fight,

While I sit shivering through the night.

Each ringing phone shakes my soul,

Each distant headline takes its toll.

Beside the door his chair remains,

While winter fades to summer rains.

I wipe the dust, I soothe the frame,

And softly whisper out his name.

The stars he guards above the sky

Are stars I watch with sleepless eyes,

Wondering if he sees them too,

And feels my love come shining through.

I wear no medals on my chest,

No uniform like all the rest,

Yet patience clothes my anxious mind,

And hope’s the light I leave behind.

So while he stands to guard the free,

A silent soldier, too, is me,

For every hero sent afar

Leaves someone waiting through the war.

And if he walks back through that gate,

To end this long, exhausting wait,

My heart will whisper in his ear:

"We both braved storms to meet right here."
