The Two-Way Door
Jacob sat at his kitchen table, the wood covered by years of spilled coffee and unpaid bills. The apartment was dim, smelling of damp laundry and the heavy, metallic scent of a late-night storm. He was staring at a final notice, his head resting in his hands, wondering if life had always been this gray. He was a man who had worked himself to the bone, only to have the bone break.
Then, the world flickered.
The weight of his head in his hands disappeared as his arms fell into empty air. There was no floor to catch his feet, no ceiling to house his thoughts. He was suspended in a vast, sterile cube of blinding white-a place where gravity felt like a suggestion rather than a law.
Amongst the white light all Jacob could see was a white shadow like figure; it had no face but he could feel it gazing at the inner layer of his mind. Then suddenly two doors crafted from a wood so dark and rich it looked like polished mahogany. As Jacob stood between the doors the air told a completely different story.
Soon the spirit explained to Jacob that these were not some ordinary doors. They were the doors who could change what had gone in the past or what awaited him in the future.
On the left, the door to the Past felt cold, like a stone in winter. It didn't glow or shine. Instead, it had a faint smell of old books and a campfire that had gone out. When Jacob got closer, he heard a soft thump-thump sound coming from the wood, just like a quiet heartbeat. This door held all his memories-the good times he missed and the mistakes he was ashamed of. It didn't promise him anything easy; it only promised him the truth.
On the right, the door to the Future felt hot to the touch. The wood was so polished it almost looked like a mirror. It had a sharp, clean smell, like a brand-new car or expensive perfume. This door didn't have a heartbeat; instead, it made a buzzing sound that made Jacob's hand lean towards it. It seemed to whisper to him about money, power, and recognition.
As his hand was leaning towards the door of the future.
Suddenly a cold thought stopped him.
I step through this door of the future, he wondered, what happens to the people I know? He realized that in a "perfect" future, he wouldn't be the man his friends and family remembered. He would be a stranger. He thought of his mother, his brother, and his friends back home. In this fake future, would they even know him? Or would they just be shadows in a life he didn't earn?
Then he looked back at the door of the past.
And if I go back? he thought. If I fix my mistakes, do I erase the people I met because of them? He realized that even his failures had led him to certain people and certain lessons. If he "fixed" his life, he might lose the very things that made him human
The spirit said-”The void is closing. You must pick a side. Will you be the king of the near future, or the builder of a better past?”
"Both of these doors are escapes," Jacob said, his voice echoing through the white void. "But I don't want to escape anymore.”
The shadow-figure’s static body flickered violently. "You would choose this empty room over a kingdom? You would choose debt and failure over a second chance?"
"It’s not failure if I’m still fighting," Jacob replied, pulling his hand back from the wood. "If I take the future, I’m a cheat. If I take the past, I’m a ghost. I’d rather be a man with a messed up life than a king with no soul. I choose none of them. I will choose the present.”
With a sudden, deafening crack, the white void shattered like a mirror. The blinding light forced Jacob to close his eyes.
When he opened them, the silence was gone. It was replaced by the familiar, rhythmic sound of his reality: Drip. Drip.
