The stonecutter's wish

Original Submission by Ilamdeep Kaur

The stonecutter’s wish

He was a stonecutter, working all day,

Chipping the mountain stones away.

He saw the king with a crown so bright,

And said, “I want to be the king tonight.”

And his wish came true, he wore the crown,

Ruling the people in the town.

The sun was hot up in the sky,

He said, “I want to be the sun so high.”

And his wish came true, he gave warm light,

Shining all day and bright.

But clouds came floating and hid his ray,

He said, “I want to be a cloud today.”

And his wish came true, soft and free,

Floating above land and sea.

The wind blew hard and pushed him away,

He said, “I want to be the wind today.”

And his wish came true, he moved so fast,

Blowing all things that came to pass.

Then he saw a mountain, big and tall,

He said, “I want to be the mountain tall.”

And his wish came true, he stood so high,

But the stonecutters chipped him, oh my!

He went back to his stone and hand,

Working hard upon his land.

And he learned at last, a fact so true,

The strongest power is in what you do.
