‘The silk ribbon.’
Noura stared out her window, impatiently tapping her foot as she waited for a certain someone. She peeked at the sky, which was a tapestry of dark clouds, brooding and swollen, ready to unleash a storm that had been brewing for days.
“Where is he?” She whispered to herself as she looked out into the forest in front of the castle. Just then, she spotted him, holding up a small mirror to catch her attention.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Noura lifted her dress and dashed downstairs, weaving through the bustling servants; her worries were far greater than any accidental collision.
She reached the door, pushing it with all the force she could muster, and ran to the forest. Her breathing became rapid as she reached their meeting spot.
Adam noticed how out of breath she was, he came closer and held her shoulders, “How many times have I told you to not run like that? You’ll hurt yourself one day.”
Noura shook off his hands and glared at him, “You were thirty minutes late! You know I’m only allowed to go outside for just an hour, now you’ve wasted half of our time together.”
Adam chuckled in amusement, “It’s not easy to sneak out during my duty hours just to meet you.”
It suddenly hit Noura. The ugly truth. They weren’t meant to see each other since they both were from opposite factions, destined to be enemies. But how could they harbor hatred when love had quietly blossomed in both their hearts? And now they had to meet secretly, careful to not draw any attention.
“I have something for you, farasha,” Adam whispered, his fingers deftly retrieving a small, shimmering object from his pocket.
Noura’s heart fluttered at the nickname; it was a name he had given her the moment he first laid eyes on her, as she stood apart from the crowd, a radiant butterfly amidst dull flowers.
She stared at the object in his hands, a silk ribbon. Indeed, it was something she had never seen before, utterly stunning and perfect.
“This is beautiful, thank you.” Noura said as she took it from his hand, and stroked it gently.
Adam stared at her, wishing that the circumstances were different and they could see each other openly.
Noura sensed his gaze and looked up at him, staring at his features in awe. His face was rugged and angular, a strong jawline, and a slightly crooked nose, with piercing green eyes that seemed to hold both wisdom and a hint of mischief, framed by a tousle of dark, wavy hair.
“If you keep on staring at me like that, I might lose my control Noura,” Adam said, his voice like a sight lost in the air.
Noura shyly looked away, “I-I think I have to go now.”
His brows furrowed at her talk of departure, “But it’s only been a few minutes farasha.”
Noura sighed heavily, “Father told me to come home early today as some suitors are coming to see me, so I need to appear presentable.”
Adam clenched his jaw, trying to control his anger, “You’re not going to say yes to any of them, right?”
Noura didn’t meet his eyes, which worried him further, “Noura, look at me.”
She did, but what he saw next, made his heart clench. Her eyes were filled with tears, and her nose had become red, her lips trembled slightly as she tried to look at him.
Adam couldn’t stop himself from grabbing her by the waist and hugging her tightly. No one would take away his Noura from him, not if she was safe in his arms.
“Don’t. Please Noura. Don’t.” He murmured, his voice breaking a bit at the end.
Noura sobbed in his chest, helpless to say the least, “But father wants me to choose one today. He says his health is worsening day by day, and he needs to find a new king soon.”
Raindrops pelted the ground, the relentless drumming creating a symphony of nature’s fury.
Adam inhaled her scent, trying to calm his nerves, “I can’t see you with anyone else.”
Noura nodded against his chest, “I know, but I don’t really have a choice.”
He released her from the embrace and looked deeply into her eyes before finally speaking, “Run away with me.”
Noura’s eyes widened in shock at his proposal, and she stepped back, asking, “What? Where would we even go?”
Adam shrugged his shoulders, “Wherever you want to.”
She shook her head immediately, “I don’t want to put you through trouble Adam. And…I do not want to go against my own father.”
Adam pinched the bridge of his nose, “So you’ll accept one of the suitors today?”
Noura didn’t know how to reply to that. She was in a dilemma. If she chose to go with him, she would be betraying her father. Yet, if she accepted her father’s decision, she would be betraying Adam. The weight of the decision pressed down on her; she had to choose, and it had to be now.
Before she could reply, she heard the thundering noise of one of the soldiers, “There! In the forest, the one in the red uniform! Chase him!”
Noura gasped as she heard the words, and Adam’s heart pounded loudly against his chest.
Without thinking, he grabbed her wrist and ran. He didn’t know where he was going, but he knew he’d not leave without her, no matter what she said.
“Where are we going?” Noura squealed as she tried to catch up with his pace.
“Far away from here,” Adam shouted back before quickening his pace.
They didn’t know how much time had passed when they reached a small village near the forest. Noura sat on a bench nearby at caught her breath, before scowling at Adam.
Adam feigned innocence, “What?”
She only shook her head and sighed, frustration mingling with relief. “You can’t just drag me away like that! What if they catch us?”
Adam leaned closer, urgency in his eyes. “If they find us, we’ll figure it out together. But right now, we have a moment of safety. We need to decide what we’re going to do.”
Noura looked around, the village bustling with life yet feeling foreign to her. “What about my father? He’ll send someone after me.”
Adam took a deep breath, “Noura, you have to think about what you want. Do you want to be a pawn in someone else’s game, or do you want to choose your own path?”
Her heart raced at the thought. “I want to be with you, Adam, but I can’t just abandon everything I’ve known. It’s not that simple.”
“Then let’s make it simple,” he replied, his voice steady. “You have the choice to stay or to leave. If you stay, you’ll be forced into a life you don’t want. But if you leave with me, you’ll be free to create your own destiny.”
Noura felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. Memories of her father’s expectations, the lavish halls of the castle, and the suitors who would come calling flooded her mind. But then she saw Adam, the boy who had given her a name, a reason to smile, and a glimpse of a life beyond the confines of her duties.
“What about your duties?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
“I’ll figure it out. I can’t go back to that life knowing I have you. We can build something new together, away from all this.”
Noura searched his eyes, looking for a hint of doubt, but all she saw was determination. “What if it doesn’t work? What if we can’t find a place for us?”
“We will,” Adam said, his confidence infectious. “We’ll find a way, no matter what it takes.”
She hesitated, torn between the fear of the unknown and the longing for freedom. Finally, she took a deep breath and nodded. “Okay. Let’s go.”
Adam's face lit up with a mixture of relief and joy. “Really? You mean it?”
“Yes,” she said firmly, her resolve growing stronger. “I’ll go with you.”
As they stood up, a sudden realization hit Noura. “What about your people? They’ll be looking for you too.”
“I’ll think of something,” Adam replied, taking her hand. “For now, let’s just focus on getting away from here.”
With their hearts racing and hands intertwined, they set off, leaving behind the life they once knew.
As they walked, Noura felt a mix of fear and exhilaration, but above all, she felt a sense of freedom. They were stepping into the unknown, but together, they could face anything.
And as they disappeared into the distance, the castle stood silent, unaware that two hearts had chosen love over duty, and that their story was only just beginning.
