The Silent Daughter-In-Law

By Sheikh Shabir Kulgami

The silent daughter-in-law

Mother, Mother! Where are you?

Give me the food: I am too hungry,

Honey son, honey son, I am here weeping for her,

Alas the day, she came to me!

She is a witch I do swear.

Who Mother, who Mother? I don’t get.

Dear heart, she. Who else?

The daughter of a bitch! The monster!

Alas the day, she came to us!

Who Mother, who? Please do tell,

The daughter-in-law dear, why don’t you see?

But Mother, she is a charm, she is so calm,

A donkey in work, she does no harm,

She has wedded me, don’t you miss;

No, no shut up: you are my son

She kills me with you in smile,

She to me is an ugly sight

What though she is a dumb creature, my son?
