The Second of Many

It is the genesis of June

in the depth of winter,

on a star-lit night.

Though freezing, I still choose the outside.

I look to the millions above

and recognize not even one.

I sigh and empty my lungs

to a sky that cares nothing about my breath,

and listen to my heart beat,

uncorrupted by the sound of collapsing lungs.

I hope I do not hold this winter too close,

because last I did,

spring forgot my name.

It's ironic I am thinking of death.

I am only 25.

A chosen calm settles

as my mind relives the days of my life.

I remember a boy with a charm

that could outrun the noise,

a boy brilliant in a quiet way,

unnoticed because to the world

brilliance has to shout.

Once a girl said my softness

is the bravest thing about me,

and I thought she was calling me weak

with a kindness.

In this found calm, a realisation settles:

that I am a killer.

I walk in the graveyard of dead me(s)

and see the artist I killed

to get this stable job.

Behind him is a tombstone

of the dreamer I poisoned with mediocrity.

And there lies the soldier

strangled by apathy,

because he felt too much.

I now think of the boy that calls me Tate.

What am I to teach him?

To be a killer like me?

Or to become an anomaly —

the very thing this world hates?

I will protect this dreamer

and equip his soldier,

and as for the artist,

I will set him free.

I only ask one thing of him:

that one day

when the lady in black

comes dancing my way

and I take my fall,

may he be kind enough

to not lock me in a box

but burn me,

because I always liked the sun.

And spread me in a quiet street

and coloured fields.

Let me return to the earth as beauty,

not rotting flesh.

Let me add to the weight of the world.

Do not credit my poems.

They were never mine.

I was but a medium for the universe,

and on nights like these

I trespassed into the domain of gods

and uprooted words

from the collective consciousness.
