The Sago
By Sajitha TK
It must be the bat's doing
The scent of fresh sago*
Some smells are like that
No matter how well you hide it
Like the light that streams in through the sago fronds
Throws up the well-spring
Of all the times had
Around the straw mat that memory laid out
On the little wooden chairs we sat,
Women and children
Crushing the pods
of stories
and little by little
The nuts gathered up
In the scattered fruits of sago
flowed again
the strands of things past.
The fresh green fronds of joy
Grew old and
dry and
then fell.
And with it
the laughter and the sadness
Written into its aged rings.
Hugging in gratitude
the ground that gave way
Down it went
To the deep.
*Queen Sago is a species of cycad known in the wild from southern India.
They grow over centuries and are considered among the world's most threatened plant groups.
