The Room I Never Found

I booked us a journey

on a train that touched the sky.

Rooms lined up like promises -

luxury, chaos,

names I couldn’t find.

You waited,

quiet, patient,

the way only mothers wait

when their children are still learning,

to map the wretched way.

I kept saying, just a minute,

kept running past strangers,

carrying the shame of being late

to every moment that mattered.

By the time I found the door,

your shoulders had folded into the wall.

You smiled - that tired, forgiving smile

that says I told you I’m fine

and means to stop prying.

Our rooms were separate.

I said I’d sleep beside you.

You said nothing,

and that silence became home.

Later -

I see your photo and think:

I did not give you the life you deserved.

But somewhere between the blur and the stillness

you answer,

You were more than enough.

So tonight I stop searching.

I let the train move without me.

I sit in the hallway

and breathe.

Your voice stays,

but the guilt finally leaves.
