The Recipe for Democracy

Draw the lines on paper,

and let the people fight.

Paint the flags in pastel,

and cover the blood beneath.

Use fancy words for things grim,

like "Freedom" for "slavery,"

and "terror" for "bravery."

Then none dare cross the rim.

Sell your souls for a buck;

that's what gets you bread.

Forget the compass of morals;

that sure is a pain in the head.

Call it democracy;

they won't get it,

these country brutes!

Make roads narrow and neat,

so pockets can remain deep.

Oh Father of Development!

They'll forget you not.

Expressions they can make,

only till they reach your door.

Media can always be free,

but the cost shall remain high.

Religion, race, and class;

our weapons to rule.

Ignorance, the mightiest of all,

a bliss we shall call.

But to learn,

or to question,

we must not hold,

pluck it out from the root.

Call it democracy;

they won't get it,

these country brutes!
