The Raven & The Songbird

By Sarah Colleen (s.c.)

Once there was a songbird,

whose opulent enclosure was all she knew.

A cage where she sang her song of sunshine

as she grew and grew.

Her colors were a watercolor;

brilliant and rich;

yet, over her heart,

remains an ever-present stitch!

she wishes not for more melodies,

but a mate;

o’ what an inferno of passion

they would create!

day after day,

night after night,

she serenades to the darkness

in the midst of her vivacious plight.

then one day,

an exotic song rang back true;

a Raven appeared,

so jet-black, he emerged blue.

his tune of melancholy

rattled through the room,

oozing of longing,

sadness, perilous doom.

yet the songbird had never experienced

a sound so sweet,

she ruffled her feathers,

and refused to deny herself a grateful tweet.

The Raven’s ballad

unlatched her gilded cell,

pulling her deeply

into his intoxicating spell.

together, the Raven and The Songbird waltzed

and chatted into the universe,

sounding delicious tunes

in spite of their curse.

the unlikely pair,

never to part,

meant to sing their ditties of

passion, love, art.

a cage shall never

hold the birds again,

remembering nothing of that

loneliness, not even in the end.

now and forevermore,

the Raven she shall adore.
