The Quarryman's Dead.

The quarryman was once host to the marble columns,

but he was absent when we took them further up the coast.

There, each part of you, beloved old stones,

we planted as our henge.

When ritual after ritual carved meaning into you,

the quarryman had but silence to send.

Monolithic splendour, resting on your pillars—

our bated breath stilled when you spoke in soft winds' shivers,

in breezes turned to hymns that moved as breath arched

and as arches breathed.

Until that night came—

the quarryman marched.

He came with no bought virtue.

He came with no claim to you.

He came seeking reprieve

from storm's ebb and heave.

Without your ceremony that keeps the tide folding slowly—

his eyes latched to stone alone—

saltwater rain came down, clattering at his quarry.

You blew not then through sullen pillars.

Not air, not song, not whispered shivers.

Only a single command to the quarryman,

who had long since passed

in mist-drowned earth.

Cold quarryman's spirit, flow away—

into the wind, into the bay.

May you rest upon the foam

and, capricious, dissolve alone.
